What AEO means now
AEO describes the work of preparing content for visibility inside AI-generated responses. The goal extends beyond ranking a page, your organization may need to appear as a cited source, a recommended provider, or the factual basis of an answer.
This creates 4 distinct outcomes:
- Retrieval: The system can discover and access the content.
- Understanding: The system can identify the entities, claims, and relationships on the page.
- Citation: The content is selected as supporting evidence.
- Action: An AI agent can use the information or interface to complete a task.
AEO is not a replacement for SEO; it extends the same foundation into AI search and agent-driven experiences.
Google confirms this relationship in its 2026 generative search guidance. AI Overviews and AI Mode use the existing Search index, ranking systems, retrieval-augmented generation, and query fan-out. From Google’s perspective, optimizing for generative search remains part of SEO.
The AEO label is still useful because ranking is no longer the only form of visibility.
Why AI visibility changes the value of a click
AI search can answer a question before the user visits its sources. It may retrieve several pages, combine their information, and present a conclusion with supporting links.
A Pew Research Center study found that users clicked a traditional Google result in 8% of visits containing an AI summary, compared with 15% of visits without one. A source cited inside the summary received a click in only 1% of visits.
The study measured U.S. behavior in March 2025, so it is a directional signal rather than a universal benchmark. It still demonstrates an important shift: visibility, influence, and website traffic are separating.
A website now serves 3 roles — a destination for people, a source of evidence for AI systems, and an interface for emerging agents.
What makes content AEO-ready?
AI systems need content they can retrieve and interpret with limited ambiguity. That starts with the same discoverability, crawlability, machine-readable structure, and signals of trust that support strong SEO.
The most useful AEO content includes:
- Direct answers: State the main claim clearly and define its scope.
- Original evidence: Add firsthand experience, research, examples, methodology, or product knowledge.
- Clear ownership: Identify the author, organization, and relevant expertise.
- Stable entities: Use consistent names for products, services, people, and locations.
- Current information: Display publication and update dates where freshness matters.
- Supporting context: Explain limitations, dependencies, and the conditions under which a claim is true.
Google’s guidance places particular emphasis on non-commodity content. Repeating information that already exists across hundreds of pages gives an AI system another URL, but no stronger reason to retrieve or cite it.
Clear headings and focused sections also help. There is no requirement to split every article into tiny answer fragments. Google explicitly says that content “chunking” is unnecessary for its generative features. Structure the page around what helps the reader understand the subject.
What developers and agencies should prioritize
AEO implementation belongs in the content platform and delivery process. It cannot be solved through copy changes alone.
1. Make content accessible
Maintain clean status codes, canonicals, XML sitemaps, internal links, and crawlable HTML. Confirm that important content is present in the rendered page and does not depend on blocked scripts or APIs.
Crawler access also requires an explicit policy. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot for visibility in ChatGPT search, while using separate controls for potential model training. Perplexity documents similar requirements for PerplexityBot.
Check robots.txt, CDN rules, firewalls, and server logs together — an allowed crawler can still be blocked by infrastructure.
2. Build structured sources of truth
Important facts should live in structured CMS fields rather than inside presentation components. Product specifications, authors, credentials, prices, locations, availability, dates, and service details can then populate pages, metadata, feeds, and APIs from the same source.
Schema supports this work when it accurately represents visible content. It can make pages eligible for established rich results, but Google says there is no special Schema.org markup required for generative search.
The goal is consistency across every machine-readable surface, rather than markup volume.
3. Preserve evidence and provenance
Stable URLs, source links, publication dates, update history, and clear authorship help systems assess whether information is current and attributable.
For agencies, this requires editorial governance as much as development. Teams need ownership rules for updating facts, consolidating duplicate pages, reviewing automated content, and removing outdated claims.
4. Design for agents as well as crawlers
AI agents increasingly inspect the DOM, accessibility tree, forms, and interactive controls. Semantic HTML, descriptive labels, predictable states, and useful validation support both accessibility and automated interaction.

Which AEO tactics deserve caution?
Several widely promoted tactics have narrower benefits than their positioning suggests.
llms.txt: This remains an experimental proposal. Monogram uses llms.txt as a curated content guide, and it can support systems designed to consume it. Google currently ignores the file for Search and its generative features, so it should be treated as a supplemental format rather than a ranking dependency.
Special AI schema: No universal AEO schema exists. Use supported structured data for documented features and keep it aligned with the visible page.
Mass-produced question pages: Google’s AI systems can understand synonyms and related intent. Creating a page for every possible prompt adds duplication and may conflict with policies against scaled content abuse.
Guaranteed AI rankings: Generated answers vary by platform, model, location, context, and time. Any measurement system should make that uncertainty visible.
How should AEO be measured?
AEO requires a wider scorecard than organic traffic alone.
- Search performance: Impressions, clicks, rankings, landing pages, and conversions.
- AI visibility: Citations, cited pages, answer inclusion, and coverage across a controlled prompt set.
- Referral behavior: Visits from AI platforms and the actions completed after arrival.
- Entity accuracy: Whether AI systems describe the organization, products, and differentiators correctly.
- Business outcomes: Qualified leads, subscriptions, product discovery, or completed transactions.
The measurement infrastructure is improving. Bing Webmaster Tools introduced AI Performance with citation, cited-page, and grounding-query data. Google has begun providing dedicated generative AI visibility reports in Search Console, while ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links.
These signals should be combined with business results. A citation can influence a decision without producing an immediate session, while a small number of AI referrals may carry strong intent.
